Varieties: Rubarb Glaskin’s Perpetual; Rhubarb Victoria

Rheum rhaponticum: Grow in a good, fertile, well drained soil making sure when planting that the crowns are not set too deeply - the  bud should be above soil level.

A few stems can be pulled the second year after planting , more in the following years. For really early tender young stems forcing the crop in the ground  by covering the  plant  with straw in early January and then covering the straw  with a forcing pot or upturned flower pot that has the hole covered to ensure darkness. After cropping has finished  - May/June  remove the pot  and weed and tidy the plant . In autumn give a good   mulch with compost.

Pest & Disease: very few problems  - rotting of the crown may occur if planting has been too deep or the soil is very wet  - dig up and destroy and replant elsewhere. Slugs can be a problem  especially when forcing on the young stems - they too appreciate the tender  growth!  Best picked off.

Harvesting:Stems should be pulled , not cut and the leaves removed  as soon as possible or they will cause the stems to wilt. The leaves are poisonous . Stems should be cooked as soon as possible and can be used in pies, crumbles, stewed, jams and wine.
