Rubus idaeas: Raspberries prefer cool moist conditions and reward with better crops
when well mulched. The soil must not be poorly drained . On sandy , gravelly soils
a better crop will be obtained by watering. Partially shaded sites are not a problem
for these plants . Plant 45cm (18”) apart with 1.8m (6ft) between rows. There are
two distinct type of raspberry Summer Fruiting and Autumn Fruiting and it is important
to know which you are growing as the pruning is quite different !! Summer varieties
produce their crop in a short period of time while autumn varieties produce their
fruit over a longer period of time -
Pruning: Summer varieties fruit on the wood/stems they made in the previous growing
season , once these stems have fruited they should be cut to ground level. Whilst
they are fruiting on these stems they are also making new stems for the following
year which must be trained and tied into wires ready for next years crop. Autumn
varieties fruit on the wood /stems they make in the growing season , these stems
once fruited are cut to ground level , at the end of the year therefore Autumn varieties
can be all cut to ground level -
