Rubus idaeas: Raspberries prefer cool moist conditions and reward with better crops when well mulched. The soil must not be poorly drained . On sandy , gravelly soils a better crop will be obtained by watering.   Partially shaded sites are not a problem for these plants . Plant 45cm (18”) apart  with 1.8m (6ft) between rows. There are two distinct type of raspberry Summer Fruiting and Autumn Fruiting  and it is important to  know which you are growing as the pruning is quite different !!  Summer varieties produce their crop  in a short period of time while autumn varieties produce their fruit over a longer period of time  - less glut forming!

Pruning: Summer  varieties fruit on the wood/stems they made in the previous growing season , once these stems have fruited they should be cut to ground level. Whilst they are fruiting on these stems they are also  making new stems for the following year  which must be trained and tied into wires ready for next years crop. Autumn   varieties fruit on the wood /stems they make in the growing season  , these stems once fruited are cut to ground level , at the end of the year therefore Autumn varieties can be all cut to ground level  - often these canes do not need support.  A good mulch and seaweed feed in the spring are beneficial.  Raspberries have very shallow roots and so when weeding around the plants do so by hand to avoid damage to the root system. Mulches are also beneficial in retaining moisture over the  shallow roots and in keeping the root run cool in summer.  When planting raspberries it is very important not to plant them too deeply  - this is one of the biggest causes of failure of new.

Canes.

Pest & Disease: Birds are are major problem - so protection is necessary. The raspberry beetle  which caused small maggots in the fruit can be a problem but usually on summer fruit not the autumn ones.  Pull back mulches for the winter to allow birds to ‘clean’ the root run of the beetle pupae - we use our chickens for this task. Virus diseases - a mottled yellowing of leaves -  may occur especially with older canes -   If your canes become infected  grub out and burn and never replant raspberries where raspberries have previously grown. Where leaves yellow between the veins  this is probably not viral but chlorosis - your  soil is too alkaline  -  regular  spraying with a seaweed feed will help.

Harvesting:  the fruits are soft and do not travel well -  Shop raspberries are by necessity varieties with thicker skins and are never as ‘melt in your mouth’  - a really good reason for growing your own!

Varieties: Raspberry Glen Moy; Raspberry Glen Rosa; Raspberry Glen Magna; Raspberry Joan J; Raspberry Allgold
