Varieties: Blueberry Earliblue; Blueberry Toro; Blueberry Chandler; Blueberry Herbert.

Vaccinium corymbosum.  The High Bush Blueberry. Besides producing you a good crop of highly nutritious berries the bushes have good ornamental value with attractive flowers and stunning autumnal colours. Blueberry bushes need an acid soil - this is essential.  In area where this is not the soil type growing in large pots is best , indeed they do very well in pots using ericaceous compost and ericaceous fertiliser.  The pots must not be allowed to dry out especially as the fruits are forming .

Height : depends on variety most modern hybrids grow to 1.5/1.8m (5/6ft).

Pruning Very little attention is needed in  the first 3 years except removal of weak or crossing growth.  In future years the strong extension growth made in the summer  can be shortened by 1/3rd during the winter .

Pest & Disease - the bushes suffer from very few problems  the main one is usually  yellowing of the leaves and poor growth   induced by incorrect soil pH or limey water.  In high lime areas use rain water to water your plants not tap water.

Harvesting - pick as fruit ripen to a rich blue . Protection from birds is essential they too have read about the health benefits!Use in pies, jams, jellies and syrups but what a waste, fresh is best! .
